Character; God’s Key To A Glorious Life

Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. Daniel 6:4. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: People of character may make mistakes, but they live above them.

We were created by God to showcase His Glory and Beauty. Existing in Divine glory means existing in the realm of Divine magnificence, splendour, beauty, brilliance, admiration and honour. But if a man wants to exist in this realm of glory for which we were created, his garment must be holy as we understand from Exodus 28:2‘And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.’ Therefore, holiness of life is crucial for a glorious destiny and life. And character is one of the manifestations of holiness. This means that there is an inextricable connection between character and the glory of God. So, in order to attain a glorious life, we need character. What then is character?

From our anchor Scripture, we understand from the life of Daniel that an aspect of character involves living in the realm of consistent positive action or behaviour. Therefore, someone is said to be a person of character if he consistently acts positively or correctly. The word ‘faithful’ in our anchor Scripture as used in reference to Daniel also means consistence. It is existence in the realm of consistent positive character or behaviour. To be a person of character therefore means to exist in the realm of consistent positive lifestyle or consistent correct behaviour. It is a realm of reliability, dependability and ‘trustability’. If a person lives like this, you know what to expect from him. For instance, if he does not lie, then you expect him to be consistent in being honest and not lying. If he does not steal, then you expect him to be consistent in not stealing. Beloved, even wicked people do good things occasionally. And it is not what you do occasionally that defines your character but what you do consistently. Consistency, therefore, is what makes the difference between a person of character and others.
The character of the eagle for instance is to soar and that of the lion is to roar, and you expect the eagle to soar or the lion to roar consistently. Furthermore, Character can also be defined as existing morally above average or above board. In Daniel Chapter Six Verse Four, we read that Daniel was faithful and that there was no error or fault found in him. That means he almost appeared like an angel. A person of character usually does things beyond average level. To have character is also to exist above the realm of recurrent error and blame. Daniel was morally above average; he lived above the realm of recurrent error or mistake. People of character may make mistakes, but they live above them.
