LABOUR
leader Ed Miliband would make it a criminal offence for employers to exploit
migrant workers by undercutting their pay and conditions.
During a
speech on immigration yesterday, Mr Miliband said he wanted to end an 'epidemic
of exploitation' that has led to workers having wages withheld and being forced
to live in appalling conditions. Continue...
'When
people can be exploited for low wages or endangered at work, it drags the whole
system down, undercutting the pay and conditions of local workers,' the Labour
leader told an audience in Great Yarmouth.
'We must
end the epidemic of exploitation. We must stop people's living standards being
undermined by scandalous undercutting.'
Outlining a
key pledge for next year's election, he also promised to include 'proper' entry
and exit checks, a limit on in-work benefits for EU migrants and a two-year
wait before immigrants can claim benefits.
It came as
a document leaked to the Daily Telegraph showed Labour activists in constituencies
threatened by Ukip had been urged to 'move the conversation on' when voters
raised immigration.
Mr Miliband
described it as 'not very well drafted' but said there could be no suggestion
he wanted to dodge the issue.
'I think
what matters about our party is...the pledge we're making rather than some not
very well-drafted language in a briefing document,' he added.
Labour MP
Simon Danczuk sid he was concerned the message was employers and business had
to do more on immigration, when 'it's down to the government'.
