A Christian student has been kicked off his university course after
voicing anti-gay marriage views on Facebook – saying his opinions are
‘mainstream and shared by millions’.
Felix Ngole, 38, was a second-year masters student at Sheffield University
when he shared a Facebook post saying ‘I stand with Kim Davis’ – the American
county clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licences to same-sex
couples.
Two months later he said he received an email from the university asking
him to attend a meeting to discuss the posts and the father of four was then
referred to a fitness to practise committee, which decided he should be ejected
from the course.
A letter revealing the committee’s decision later told him his actions
had ‘transgressed boundaries which are not deemed appropriate for someone
entering the social work profession’ and ordered him to hand in his student
card.
Mr Ngole said: ‘My beliefs about marriage and sexual ethics reflect
mainstream, biblical understanding, shared by millions around the world.
‘Simply expressing that understanding, in a personal capacity, on my
Facebook page, cannot be allowed to become a bar to serving and helping others
in a professional capacity as a social worker.
Felix is
appealing the decision, supported by the Christian Legal Centre.
If the decision is not overturned, it could prevent Felix from becoming a social worker, which he believes is his vocation.
Felix's case has gained widepsread media coverage, including The Times, The Telegraph, The Independent, The Mail and The Express giving a Christian witness about marriage.
