Sinkhole appears at Oxford Street in Manchester city centre

GMP have confirmed Whitworth Street at its junction with Oxford Street and Oxford Road has been cordoned off after reports of yet another sinkhole.
Police have alerted Manchester city council who are sending experts to the scene.
A GMP spokesman said they had responded to reports that a sinkhole seemed to be emerging.
We’ve just spoken to the water company United Utilities.
They have sent five crews out to inspect the area around the Whitworth Street sinkhole tonight.
There is a sewer around 100m underneath but they say early indications are that sewer hasn’t collapsed and that the road damage isn’t related to the waterways.

The road has had one lane re-opened, and workers will be on site in the morning nice and early to see what needs doing to make the rest of the area safe and to re-open the road fully.
We’ll have the latest updates from 6.30am with Pete Bainbridge in the breaking news.

If you will be driving via this route, please expect a bit of traffic tomorrow.
