Female
genital mutilation is still practiced at a rate of one girl every 11 seconds
around the world in 29 countries. At least 130 million women and girls live
with the consequences of having their sexual organs forcibly mutilated, with
many suffering from fistula, maternal mortality, child mortality, infection
from Aids and typhus, and post-traumatic stress.
The Gambian
government has introduced a ban on Female Genital Mutilation ( FGM ) which
comes into effect immediately. The country’s leader - President Yahya Jammeh
made a public proclamation outlawing the ancient practice. He reportedly
pointed out that since his country was in the twenty first century, practices
such as FGM have no place in modernity and should therefore be eradicated.
