“There's
never enough time to do all the nothing you want.” ― Bill Watterson.
“The proper
function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying
to prolong them. I shall use my time.” ― Jack London.
Have you ever spent an afternoon browsing social media or watching videos
about kittens? Was last night filled with watching yet another episode of yet
another must-see TV show? Could you be doing more with your time?
If the
answer is yes to any of the above it could be you are wasting your life away.
But what constitutes waste? One person's procrastination could be another's
much-needed leisure time or passion.
We all ask
ourselves the same question: am I wasting my life? The answer depends on the
person, and everyone is different, with one exception: our time is finite. How
we spend that time, however, could be all the difference between a wasted life
and a full one.
A life
Coach, Anna Williamson, lists 10 key things you can do right now to improve how
you spend your time.
1. Make a
'to do' list. Writing out what to do and when to do it is a great way to manage
your time.
2. ‘You’
time. Taking time each day or week just for you is a great way to re-energise.
3. Eat. Too
many of us work through lunch or eat at our desk. Get away from the computer
screen, eat healthily, recharge and refresh.
4. Delegate.
Don't do it all yourself. If someone else can do the task just as well, and is
happy to do it, let them.
5. Clock
off. End each working day at a fixed time and stick to it. No work emails or
phone calls after you have clocked off.
6. Get a
hobby. With work, family and day-to-day chores taking up the majority of your
life, take up a hobby or interest to break up the pattern.
7. Learn
something new. Expanding your knowledge and brain power is a great way to boost
motivation, self-belief and self-esteem.
8. Chat.
Instead of spending time on social media, why not reconnect with friends and
family?
9. Sleep.
Sleep is key to being happy, motivated and healthy. Go to bed earlier if
needed.
10. Family.
Time with family can be great for stability, love and support.
