At least 40 Nigerians were deported from the United Kingdom and Australia on Wednesday, The Nation
reports.
It was gathered that these deportees; both
male and female, touched down at the Hajj camp area of the Murtala Muhammed
International Airport (MMIA) on a chartered aircraft.
The police, National Agency for Protection and
Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Immigration officers were on hand to receive
the Nigerians and checked their identities to confirm their nationalities.
According to the Nation, some of the deportees complained when Immigration
officers attempted to collect their fingerprints, while others simply obliged
and left the airport. The deportees reportedly refused to speak with
journalists after being cleared by the Immigration officers, and while some
were seen taking cabs out of the airport, others engaged in group discussions.
Sources say the deportees were sent packing for overstaying their visas, among
other immigration offences. Ekpedeme King. the
NIS image maker, confirmed the deportation,
but did not speak any further. Recently, about 172 Nigerian migrants in Libya on their way to Europe
were repatriated to the country. Daily Post reports that according to the
International Organization for Migration (IOM), the migrants including six
women were on their way to Europe when they
were apprehended by the Libyan government. IOM however said the arrested
migrants were lucky that were put in detention centres as many other migrants
have lost their lives at the Mediterranean.
About 97 migrants have reportedly died this
year alone on the route linking Libya
to Italy.
