Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. once said "It's faith in something and enthusiasm for something that makes a life worth living."
When was the last time you sat down, or took a walk, to think about what makes this one life you have meaningful; what makes it worth living? When was the last time you took a break from solving problems, completing tasks, and pursuing your goals to ask whether those goals were the right ones to pursue? The flourishing of our individual lives depends in part on our ability to ask and answer the question of what makes life worth living.
Jesus lived for just thirty-three years and travelled no more than a couple of hundred kilometres in any direction. He lived at the time of seemingly ultimate power, that of the Roman Emperors, yet He discussed politics only once, when the issue of taxation was used to try and trap him. He penned no letters and left no monuments, yet His life and death changed the entire world through the redemptive power of the cross. All of this is told in the rich fabric of the gospels. It is a story unparalleled in the history of the world. A story of Jesus who fulfilled every requirement of the law and the Old Covenant, and ushered in the New Covenant of Grace; of unmerited, undeserved, unfathomable favour upon the lives of all who believe. It is a story of Jesus, whose life and death made us completely righteous, not because of anything we did, but because of everything He did. It is a story of love so divine and of grace so deep that it deserves to be told in many different ways, as the gospels do so beautifully.
Life is full of fun and becomes enjoyable when you find a reason to live. I believe there is a purpose for everyone, but it is our individual responsibility to discover it.
"I believe that God has put gifts and talents and ability on the inside of every one of us. When you develop that and you believe in yourself and you believe that you're a person of influence and a person of purpose, I believe you can rise up out of any situation." -Joel Osteen.
"Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction." -John F. Kennedy.
